{"id":635,"date":"2014-02-05T16:11:58","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T00:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/?p=635"},"modified":"2014-03-01T18:42:24","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T02:42:24","slug":"sailing-to-panama-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/?p=635","title":{"rendered":"Sailing to Panama &#8211; Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All night the papagayos have been blowing and conditions quickly became uncomfortable.\u00a0 I, of course, am beside myself with fear.\u00a0 Darold is happy for the wind and interested in seeing how the boat will handle herself.\u00a0 For most of the night Darold was on watch during the night; the seas built due to the wind, and the wind built up to 25 knots, gusting to 30.\u00a0 When wind builds that quickly the wind waves build and have short intervals between them, making for a very uncomfortable and bumpy ride.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to describe what it\u2019s like to be in somewhat \u201cheavy weather.\u201d\u00a0 Darold took some <a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/?p=707\">video<\/a> of it and it doesn&#8217;t do justice to what it feels like to be in the conditions in real life.\u00a0 Die-hard sailors love this stuff.\u00a0 Sadly, I am no die hard.\u00a0 I am a fair weather sailor.\u00a0 I like the wind coming from behind the boat (so it doesn&#8217;t \u201cheel\u201d &#8211; lean) and if there have to be waves of a swell, I like them also to come from behind so that the boat isn&#8217;t smashing into them.<\/p>\n<p>But imagine this:\u00a0 Your whole house is leaning over 15 or 20 degrees.\u00a0 It pitches up and down as each comes to meet the front of your house.\u00a0 Up, up, up\u2026then down again.\u00a0 If the waves have a short interval between them \u2013 say 6 seconds \u2013 this is happening often.\u00a0 And the wind is not constant.\u00a0 You get gusts of wind, which make your house point up into the wind and heel over more, causing the side of your house to dip into the water, creating a swirling flood that threatens to come directly into the living room.\u00a0 And the noise\u2026the wind is howling through your roof and each gust of wind. \u00a0(Editor&#8217;s Note &#8211; This sound very terrifying. \u00a0I&#8217;m glad I wasn&#8217;t on this boat.)<\/p>\n<p>Outside your house, you can see the threatening waves.\u00a0 Whitecaps are everywhere.\u00a0 The wind is blowing a fine spray of seawater off the top of waves.\u00a0 Eyeglass-wearers like myself are doomed to peer through a perpetual haze of seawater mist.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Dante is safely ensconced in his berth, reading. He comes up above at one point and laughs aloud as he puts his hand in the rushing seawater that fills the deck just outside the cockpit.<\/p>\n<p>Darold is in complete command as captain and is impressed with how the boat cuts through the water. Meanwhile, I am terrified.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Seinfeld does a comedy bit about people\u2019s worst fears.\u00a0 He says that #1 is public speaking and #2 is death.\u00a0 He concludes that this means that if you\u2019re at a funeral, you\u2019d rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy.
