{"id":1050,"date":"2014-07-13T12:03:59","date_gmt":"2014-07-13T19:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/?p=1050"},"modified":"2014-08-03T12:22:17","modified_gmt":"2014-08-03T19:22:17","slug":"didnt-know-much-about-history-exploring-virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/?p=1050","title":{"rendered":"Didn&#8217;t Know Much About History  (Exploring Virginia)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dismal-swamp-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1052\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dismal-swamp-3-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"dismal swamp 3\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dismal-swamp-3-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dismal-swamp-3-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dismal-swamp-3-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We were welcomed to Virginia by a sign along the Great Dismal Swamp, a narrow and shallow swath of water cut through a piece of property formerly owned (and surveyed) by George Washington himself.\u00a0\u00a0 The Great Dismal Swamp\u00a0has trees overhanging on both sides and was so narrow in some parts we had to\u00a0make sure our\u00a0mast didn&#8217;t hit any of the trees overhead as we passed by.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1056\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lock-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Lock\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lock-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lock-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Lock-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because the swamp is between two locks, the depth is controlled at about 6 feet.\u00a0 Our boat extends 5 feet 2 inches below the water and we bumped logs sticking up from the bottom several times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Dismal-Swamp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1054\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Dismal-Swamp-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Dismal Swamp\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Dismal-Swamp-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Dismal-Swamp-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Dismal-Swamp-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The scenery was absolutely beautiful but the yellow flies (only around the time of year we passed through) were horrendous.\u00a0 We were itching for weeks.\u00a0 After safely avoiding Hurricane Arthur and locking through the second lock, we made our way up to Norfolk, Virginia. As we had been making our way up the East Coast, we had been learning a lot about American history.\u00a0 Fortunately for Dante, his grade in school (5th) is the year to study American history.\u00a0 Fortunately for me and Darold, we tagged along this learning journey and were amazed to find out how much we did NOT know!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/locking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1057\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/locking-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"locking\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/locking-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/locking-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/locking-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk and its surrounding area was a super triple dose of American history and we loved it.\u00a0 We stayed 10 days in the terrific anchorage\u00a0on the Elizabeth River between Portsmouth and Norfolk, and rented a car for a portion of that time to explore the surrounding areas.\u00a0 Go ahead &#8211; ask any one of us a question about the Colonies, American Revolution, War of 1812 or Civil War!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-anchorage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1059\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-anchorage-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Norfolk anchorage\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-anchorage-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-anchorage-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-anchorage-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>When we were anchored, we saw a fantastic Fourth of July fireworks show over the city of Norfolk.\u00a0 There were about 40 boats anchored around us during the show, but they all left afterwards and we had the anchorages almost to ourselves the rest of our stay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1060\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Norfolk\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Norfolk-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>If there is one complaint we have, it&#8217;s that we simply didn&#8217;t have enough time to see all that there was to see.\u00a0 Our favorite maritime museum was the Mariner&#8217;s Museum in Newport News.\u00a0 The museum is also a laboratory where they are restoring the USS Monitor, the first armored war ship from the Civil War. We could have spent days there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/yorktown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1062\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/yorktown-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"yorktown\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/yorktown-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/yorktown-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/yorktown-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We also loved exploring around Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg.\u00a0 Before going to Williamsburg I&#8217;d never heard a complete reading of the Declaration of Independence. \u00a0 \u00a0 Even if our country doesn&#8217;t always get everything right in execution, the ideas upon which we were founded are truly inspirational.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/mt-vernon-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1058\" src=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/mt-vernon-2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"mt vernon 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/mt-vernon-2-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/mt-vernon-2-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/easethemain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/mt-vernon-2-1030x684.jpg 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Another favorite was Mount Vernon.\u00a0 It was so surreal to be able to sail up the Potomac, anchor within sight of George&#8217;s house, and then take the dinghy over to the dock to pay our respects.\u00a0 Since George Washington&#8217;s death, it&#8217;s also a tradition to ring your ship&#8217;s bell as you pass Mount Vernon on the Potomac.\u00a0 Needless to say, we dusted off our ship&#8217;s bell and paid homage to the man, whose legacy is that he\u00a0could have been king but thought better of it.\u00a0 Good job, George.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To see
